Mountains Edge Cabins offers affordable accommodation nestled in the foothills of Fiordland National Park, where simplicity, space, and natural beauty come together for a truly relaxing escape.
Nestled within the pioneering hydro village of Monowai sits Mountains Edge Cabins. Originally established to house the workers who built the electric pylons that run from the Manapouri power station in Fiordland to the Tiwai aluminum smelter in Bluff. There is 10 cabins, and 1 caravan available for hire for those who want to experience a traditional kiwi camping holiday There is a central “cook house” used as a common meeting area with fully functioning kitchen and heat pump. Our gazebo is a covered BBQ and party area perfect for those social events. There is a shared unisex bathroom/ shower block. The property is located in one of New Zealand’s hidden holiday spots only known to a few privileged enough to discover perhaps the most beautiful part of New Zealand. Monowai lies approx halfway between Te Anau, and Tuatapere, an emerging hub for the newly opened Hump Ridge Track. A feature of the area is the pristine Lake Monowai which is approx. 8.5 km drive from the property. The world renown Fiordland National Park is almost on the village’ boundary, and the Waiau River passes nearby. Your adventure starts here. Escape. Explore. Relax. Nature at its finest. 🚗 Getting Here A place to slow down, breathe in the fresh mountain air, and enjoy the simple beauty of the outdoors. Tucked away in the quiet village of Monowai, this is where the road ends, the noise fades, and nature takes over. 📍 Driving Directions From Te Anau (approx. 50 mins) Head south towards Manapouri, then continue along Blackmount–Redcliff Road following signs to Monowai. From Manapouri (approx. 35 mins) Travel south on Blackmount–Redcliff Road towards Monowai. From Tuatapere (approx. 35 mins) Follow the Southern Scenic Route inland towards Monowai. ⛽ Good to Know There are no shops or petrol stations in Monowai, so please come prepared with fuel and supplies. The nearest services are in Te Anau, Manapouri, or Tuatapere. Roads are sealed most of the way, with some rural sections—drive with care and enjoy the scenery. 🌿 The Journey The drive itself is part of the experience-- expect wide open landscapes, native bush, and stunning views as you approach the remote beauty of Monowai and the edge of Fiordland National Park. |
